Establishing cut-points for physical activity classification using triaxial accelerometer in middle-aged recreational marathoners

2018

The purpose of this study was to establish GENEA (Gravity Estimator of Normal Everyday Activity) cut-points for discriminating between six relative-intensity activity levels in middle-aged recreational marathoners. Nighty-eight (83 males and 15 females) recreational marathoners, aged 30-45 years, completed a cardiopulmonary exercise test running on a treadmill while wearing a GENEA accelerometer on their non-dominant wrist. The breath-by-breath V̇O2 data was also collected for criterion measure of physical activity categories (sedentary, light, moderate, vigorous, very vigorous and extremely vigorous). GENEA cut-points for physical activity classification was performed via Receiver Operatin…

Noninvasive Determination of Anaerobic Threshold Based on the Heart Rate Deflection Point in Water Cycling

2015

This study compared heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (V[Combining Dot Above]O2), percentage of maximal HR (%HRmax), percentage of maximal V[Combining Dot Above]O2, and cadence (Cad) related to the anaerobic threshold (AT) during a water cycling maximal test between heart rate deflection point (HRDP) and ventilatory (VT) methods. In addition, the correlations between both methods were assessed for all variables. The test was performed by 27 men in a cycle ergometer in an aquatic environment. The protocol started at a Cad of 100 b·min-1 for 3 minutes with subsequent increments of 15 b·min-1 every 2 minutes until exhaustion. A paired two-tailed Student's t-test was used to compare the variables …

Improved contrast for myeloma focal lesions with T2-weighted Dixon images compared to T1-weighted images

2019

International audience; Purpose: The purpose of this study was twofold. First, to compare the contrast between spinal multiple myeloma (MM) focal lesions and surrounding bone marrow obtained on T2-weighted Dixon fat-only MR images to that obtained on T1-weighted spin-echo images. Second, to search for correlation between bone marrow fat fraction assessed by T2-weighted Dixon sequence and International Myeloma Working Group myeloma defining events.Materials and methods: A total of 39 patients with 112 focal MM lesions were included. There were 25 men and 14 women with a mean age of 68.8±9.8 [SD] years (range: 49-88 years). Contrast between focal MM lesions and surrounding bone marrow was cal…

Benefit of using an age-adjusted D-dimer cut-off

2015

Introduction: The association between a low-moderate pretest clinical probability and a negative D-dimer (DD) value is able to exclude the possibility of pulmonary embolism (PE). The value of DD seems to increase with age, reducing its specificity. Therefore, we intend to evaluate the usefulness of an age-adjusted cut-off value for age above 50 years, applying the formula suggested by Douma (age*10) set to our laboratory method (age*5) (1) . Patients and Methods: Observational, retrospective study from January to December 2011. DD test were performed to 1515 patients attended in the emergency room of our hospital according to the clinical suspicion made by the doctor who evaluated them. The…

SDSS DR7 superclusters. Principal component analysis

2011

We apply the principal component analysis and Spearman's correlation test to study the properties of superclusters drawn from the SDSS DR7. We analyse possible selection effects in the supercluster catalogue, study the physical and morphological properties of superclusters, find their possible subsets, and determine scaling relations for superclusters. We show that the parameters of superclusters do not correlate with their distance. The correlations between the physical and morphological properties of superclusters are strong. Superclusters can be divided into two populations according to their total luminosity. High-luminosity superclusters form two sets, more elongated systems with the s…

Tests of Independence Based on Sign and Rank Covariances

2003

In this paper three different concepts of bivariate sign and rank, namely marginal sign and rank, spatial sign and rank and affine equivariant sign and rank, are considered. The aim is to see whether these different sign and rank covariances can be used to construct tests for the hypothesis of independence. In some cases (spatial sign, affine equivariant sign and rank) an additional assumption on the symmetry of marginal distribution is needed. Limiting distributions of test statistics under the null hypothesis as well as under interesting sequences of contiguous alternatives are derived. Asymptotic relative efficiencies with respect to the regular correlation test are calculated and compar…

Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTDS) and Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) in the early identification of Italian teachers with voice disorders

2019

Abstract Introduction The current Italian law does not include any guidance regarding voice education, prevention of voice disorders and screening in subjects with high vocal loading such as teachers. Objectives We aimed to check the correlation between the Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTDS) with the Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) for the evaluation of Italian teachers. In addition, we aimed to investigate whether there are differences in the frequency and intensity of discomfort symptoms in teachers with disabilities comparing vocal tract discomfort symptoms in teachers with high risk (HRVD) and low risk (LRVD) of vocal disorders according to the VoiSS cutoff (> 15.5). Methods We analyzed…

Mathematics Competence Level: The Contribution of Non-symbolic and Spatial Magnitude Comparison Skills.

2019

Magnitude comparison skills have been related to mathematics competence, although results in this area vary. The current study aimed to describe the performance of 75 children (aged 4-5 years) in two comparison tasks; and examine the strength of the relationship between each of the two tasks and mathematics competence level (MCL). Participants were assessed with the Early Numeracy Test which provides a global MCL score. Magnitude comparison skills were assessed with two tasks: a non-symbolic number comparison task and a spatial comparison task. Results of the Pearson correlation analysis showed a relationship between the two tasks with better performance in the spatial comparison task. Regr…
